Avoiding Slovenian vignette

HRVATSKA VERZIJA

Introduction

On July 1, 2008 Slovenia replaced classical road tolls for vignettes. Since then just passing Slovenia on practically all important routes is extremely expensive. However, vignettes can be avoided using state and local roads instead of motorways and expressways. On certain routes, e.g. Graz - Maribor - Zagreb, there is only few a dozen kilometers of motorway, so the use of alternative routes might be a worthwhile option.

Vignettes were introduced with a clear intention to keel over as large as possible share of the financial burden for financing and maintenance of motorways onto foreign citizens. In order to disrupt alternative driving routes, Slovenian Ministry of transport included not only toll-free expressways but even certain road state roundabouts into the vignette system. More about that issue can be read in the second part of the blog (Croatian only).

The best alternative for the motorway route Villach - Ljubljana - Zagreb is the state road Villach - Dravograd - Maribor - Zagreb. On this alternative route the state road is broad and in good condition, while the driving time is elongated for about 30 minutes.

For the route Zagreb - Maribor - Graz and access to Maribor we recommend three alternative routes, Graz - Mureck - Lenart - Ptuj - Zagreb, Graz - Pesnica - Maribor and Maribor - Zagreb. The latter two could be combined into route Graz - Pesnica - Maribor - Zagreb. The road through Pesnica and Maribor is broad and smooth, however directions in Maribor are somewhat complicated and during rush hour on working days one can expect traffic jams. Using this alternative, driving time is elongated for 15 to 30 minutes. The road through Lenart is narrow and spiry, but directions are simpler and the danger of a traffic jam danger or straying away (on motorway or expressway) is smaller. On this alternative route driving time is elongated for about 30 minutes.

Instructions for the alternative route Trieste - Istria can be found in this PDF file.

General directions for all alternative routes

Graz - Pesnica

Figure 1: Avoiding the motorway between the Austrian border and the roundabout junction near Pesnica is simple. Parallel to the motorway exists a state road with two railway crossings (trains are fairly rare). Leave the Austrian motorway A9 at ramp Spielfeld and enter Slovenia at the old border crossing, then keep straight through Šentilj and Pesnica. In Šentilj the state road passes below a motorway bridge. (for a bigger view click on the figure)

The city of Maribor area

Figure 2: Avoiding the expressway through Maribor is somewhat more complicated. Beware of the roundabout trap for catching unaware drivers near Pesnica. Detailed descriptions can be found in the following sections. (for a bigger view click on the figure)

The city of Ptuj area

Figure 3: In Ptuj area some important roads were opened in recent years. These roads are not yet charted in most of the (navigation) maps. For direction of Lenart it is important to use the new Ptuj bypass with Puh bridge over Drava river (vignette not required). (for a bigger view click on the figure)

Map description of the alternative route Graz - Pesnica - Maribor

Remark: Figures are sorted from the North to the South.

Figure 4A: The most difficult task is to avoid two motorways (the first towards Austria, the second towards Hungary) and the expressway towards Maribor, which interconnect at the large roundabout junction. Despite the fact that the roundabout is not a part of a motorway or an expressway, it is labelled with vignette sign, and vignettes are occasionally controlled there. Therefore, we present here a variant that bypasses roundabout trap through Spodnja Kungota and Dolnja Počehova. The only problematic point on the bypass is a narrow one-way bridge in Spodnja Kungota. After bypassing the roundabout trap follows a more-or-less straightforward route to the centre of Maribor. (for a bigger view click on the figure)

Figure 4B: This variant is simpler and has larger traffic capacity, but uses roundabout trap that connects state roads with two motorways and the expressway. Warning! Occasional vignette controls were reported there, therefore use this variant with upmost care and be prepared to turn back. (for a bigger view click on the figure)

Figure 5A: The next task is to drive through the centre of Maribor from the major post office by main railway station to Tito bridge over Drava river near Europark shopping centre. The easiest route requires making two turns, however it could be jammed during rush hour on working days. (for a bigger view click on the figure)

Figure 5B: A slightly more complicated route includes using one-way two-lane roads in the centre of the town. During rush hour on working days this route can be a big time saver. (for a bigger view click on the figure)

Figure 6: The centre of Maribor on one hand, and shopping malls and state road toward Croatia on the other hand, are connected with local road that crosses river Drava. From Tito bridge over Drava river by Europark shopping centre and important junction near Baumax/Mercator no traffic jams are anticipated, and the route is fairly simple. The centre is north, shopping malls south and state road toward Croatia east from the traffic lights near Baumax/Mercator. (for a bigger view click on the figure)

  1. I've just returned from my holiday in Croatia.
Thank you for alternative bypass - I tried both - via Maribor and Mureck. Thank you very much! I was very angry at Slovenians: "What do you want me to pay for ? First finish the highway to Croation borders and then ask me for money. Even the road nr.1 and 9 from Maribor to Croatia is horrible." I have no problem to pay for Austrian (cheap) and Croatian (rather expensive) roads - because it is worth it !!

  5. What is the best route to take from Zagreb to Vienna or Salzberg and avoid using Slovenian vignette?

I dont mind using Austrian vignette as it is more affordable and practical for my journey.

  6. @Pete

For both directions I recommend passing through Slovenia using route Zagreb - Ptuj - Lenart - Mureck - Graz specified in the blog.

  7. How about the trailing 2 kilometers of the road number 9, close to Croatian border ? I read that this distance is a highway and requires vignette (police checks it). Could anybody who went this road commaent that ?

    Thanks,

    Jarek.

  8. To our best knowledge road number 9 from the border on and A4 motorway up to exit Ptuj is vignette-free road. They are definitely NOT MARKED with a vignette or motorway signs (which we check on regular basis). Therefore, police and highway patrols do not have any legal basis for checking vignettes. Sometimes there is a vignette control with binoculars on the south exit of A4 motorway and we strongly believe that they are checking only vehicles that are not entering motorway via Ptuj exit. So far we have not been informed that anyone has paid any penalty by following our instructions.
